Background. Chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) are the leading causes of death worldwide, and associated anxiety can negatively impact the course of somatic pathology.
Objective: To study the clinical and laboratory special features of patients with CNCDs and identify risk factors for the development of anxiety in outpatient practice.
Material and methods. The study involved 131 individual (mean age 59.6 ± 11.8 years) seeking outpatient medical care. All patients were divided into two groups: group 1 included 98 individuals with CNCDs and anxiety (52 female, 46 male patients, mean age 55.5 ± 14.1 years); group 2 included 33 individuals with CNCDs without anxiety (17 female, 16 male patients, mean age 59.9 ± 11.6 years). The association of anxiety with supposed risk factors was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression.
Results. In patients of the Group 1, comparatively with patients of Group 2, arterial hypertension (AH) stage III (n = 48; 49.0% versus n = 8; 24.2%; p = 0.01314), abdominal obesity (n = 86; 87.7% versus n = 22; 66.7%; p = 0.00596) and diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 (n = 32; 32.7% versus n = 4; 12.1%; p = 0.02202) were significantly more common. In patients with chronic CNCDs, anxiety was significantly associated with physical inactivity (odds ratio (OR) 2.37; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.025–5.495; p = 0.044), stage III AH (OR 2.55; 95% CI: 0.988–6.558; p = 0.048), and type 2 DM (OR 3.76; 95% CI: 1.696–8.335; p = 0.001).
Conclusion. When managing patients with CNCDs, it is important to consider the correlation between anxiety and both non-modifiable (type 2 DM, stage III AH) and modifiable (physical inactivity) risk factors.
