Frequency of frailty detection in patients aged 65 and older in outpatient practice: Data from Russian epidemiological study EVKALIPT
Introduction. Frailty syndrome (FS) is a multifactorial geriatric syndrome considered a prognostic factor for the development of dependence on social support. Patients with FS are often fall out of the sight of medical professionals; identifying this syndrome in outpatient stage will improve the quality of care for elderly and senile patients.N.V. Sharashkina, V.S. Ostapenko, N.K. Runikhina, O.N. Tkacheva
Objective: To assess the incidence of FS using the “Age is not a barrier” scale and to determine the presence and nature of its correlations with chronic diseases in outpatients aged 65 and older, based on the data from a multicenter cohort study.
Material and methods. The study included 2,553 individuals (32.2% male patients) living in 11 regions of the Russian Federation, aged 65 to 107 years (mean age 76.9 ± 8 years). All patients underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment.
Results. The incidence of FS in outpatients aged 65 and older was 12.1%, raising with their age range increasing: from 5.7% in 65-74 age group to 11.7% in 75-84 age group and to 25.2% in 85 and older age group. FS is associated with age (odds ratio (OR) 1.09) per year of life, female gender (OR 1.72), history of brain stroke (OR 2.89), dementia (OR 2.40), rheumatoid arthritis (OR 2.11), osteoporosis (OR 1.80), chronic kidney disease (OR 1.70), diabetes mellitus (OR 1.66), and atherosclerosis of the lower extremity arteries (OR 1.63).
Conclusion. The results of the epidemiological study EVKALIPT demonstrate a high prevalence of FS in the Russian population.
