Abstract. Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus development is an important task of public health. One of the ways to solve it is timely detection and treatment of prediabetes – hyperglycemia that does not meet the criteria for diabetes mellitus diagnosis. Prediabetes diagnostic methods include fasting plasma glucose measuring, oral glucose tolerance test, and glycated hemoglobin assessment. Treatment strategy includes changing of lifestyle and metformin therapy. The main therapeutic goal is weight loss. In long term perspective, a combination of lifestyle modification and metformin therapy is more effective than using only the first of these methods.
