Potential of hypoglycemic therapy to reduce the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in individuals without diabetes mellitus
Abstract. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. The risk of CVD recurrence remains high despite secondary prevention measures. Modern glucose-lowering medications demonstrate high efficacy in reducing the risk of CVD. The research of hypoglycemic therapy in the past decade has been devoted to people without diabetes if they suffer from chronic heart failure or chronic kidney disease. This article includes the results of the main clinical trials of cardioprotective hypoglycemic drugs: pioglitazone, sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in relation to their effect on cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke. The data presented indicate significant potential for this therapy in the comprehensive secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients both with type 2 diabetes and without diabetes.E.A.
